One of the most common questions we receive from clients is, “How Long Will My New Boiler Last?” Our follow-up questions are: 1. How old is your boiler? 2. How often do you perform service on the boiler? 3. Do you follow a regularly scheduled maintenance and inspection check on your boiler?
The Life Expectancy of a Boiler
A page in the online guide provided by Viessmann-us.com states, “Generally speaking, the average lifespan of many boilers is around 15 years. If your boiler is older than this, then you may want to consider upgrading your system.” The website Sealed.com, which uses home energy data to design a customized plan to maximize energy savings, even mentions some boilers lasting up to 20 years. This change in data shows that not all boilers have the same lifespans.

You may wonder, “What happens if I do not replace the steam boiler in time?” The same Veissman online guide titled How Long Do Boilers Last says, “-old boilers become obsolete due to their poor efficiency and emissions.” These emissions often release CO2 and are very harmful. Of course, the other outcome involves your heating system dying, leaving you without the benefits you use it for.
Keep Your Boiler from Dying
Please visit the 2021 blog post from our own Boilerman explaining how a boiler needs daily cleaning for efficiency and longevity. Daily cleaning is only one of many practices that provide proactive boiler maintenance to avoid a boiler dying unexpectedly. A resource page on Sealed.com asks, “Has your boiler been maintained at least once a year by a qualified technician?” Sealed continues, “If not, it’s time to start—if your boiler isn’t well-maintained, it probably has some unseen issues that could shorten its lifespan.” Experts agree that the best practice is to implement a regularly scheduled maintenance and inspection check on your boiler.
There are articles online listing what to assess during the boiler review. However, the article When to Replace Your Boiler on the website for Applied Technologies of New York, commercial and industrial heating sales and services, mentions a more efficient option to “schedule a boiler inspection for service or repair… -contacting a professional.” If you are in Central Florida, please get in touch with us, Engineered Energy Equipment (EEE). Signs You Need to Replace Your Boiler
If you have not maintained your heating system, another page from Viessmann’s online guide titled Boiler Replacement 101 lists nine signs that a boiler’s days have ended. These signs are:
- The Boiler’s Age is Over 15 Years
- A Boiler Requires Increasingly Frequent Repairs or Experiences Regular Breakdowns
- A Boiler’s Replacement Parts are Becoming Difficult to Source
- The Fuel Bills are Increasing.
- It Takes a Long Time for the Boiler to Heat up
- The boiler is not Producing a Comfortable Temperature in Your Indoor Environment
- The Water in Your Facility or Home is not Hot Enough
- The Boiler Makes Unusual Sounds
- A Strange Smell is Coming from the Boiler.
Viessmann concludes their Boiler Replacement 101 guide with a sentiment all heating companies and experts can agree with; “have a qualified heating contractor perform a thorough inspection of your boiler.” Waiting too long to replace or repair your boiler risks your health and life, including the life and health of anyone working or living in the building, being taken away by fires or carbon monoxide poisoning. We hope this encourages you to call our heating specialists at EEE.
