An informative page on Steam Boilers from IQS Directory, a company offering equipment information to industrial boilers, writes, “Gas steam boilers are powered by natural gas or propane and are more efficient than standard boilers.”

What is a High Efficiency Boiler?

Condensing boilers fall under one category of gas boilers. A boiler guide page on the BOXT, an international boiler manufacturer website, states, “A condensing boiler runs on gas or oil and has been designed to help improve energy efficiency.” A blog post on Flotechs’ Plumbing, a heating and plumbing service provider, website professionally explains that high efficiency, another name for condensing, boilers have an “annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 90 percent or higher. This means that 90 percent of the energy produced by the boiler is actually used, and only 10 percent escapes.”

How Much Does a High Efficiency Boiler Save?

Like all machinery, the more efficient a boiler is, the less energy it requires. Furthermore, the less energy needed to run a boiler, the less it costs an individual or business to use. High Efficiency Boiler Vs. Standard Boiler

The main differentiating factor between high efficiency boilers, or condensing boilers, and standard boilers, also called non-condensing or conventional, is how each one deals with byproducts of the steam process. These byproducts are fumes, or superheated vapors, still containing energy. Standard boilers waste these fumes by allowing heat to escape into your home or business. The part of standard boilers, a flue, enables these byproducts to leave the machinery safely.

High efficiency, or condensing, boilers require “extra components and functions added to recover some of the heat in those fumes to save and re-use the energy,” reads a blog post from AccuServ, an HVAC repair, replacement, and maintenance center. This blog titled How do I Choose Between a Conventional Vs Condensing Boiler continues, “-the superheated vapor moves through the heat exchanger. At this point, the vapor cools to an extent… the vapor condenses and turns into a liquid.” The extra parts that make high-efficiency boilers save energy, making them initially more expensive.
